Interior river

Interior villages

The Lost World

To go to the tribe, I always fly past what Nat Geo has dubbed "The Lost World" where over 60 new species were discovered just last year. It is almost entirely unexplored, uninhabited and the animals were so un-used to humans that they did not run when the scientists approached them.

Jungle Villages

Its a jungle out there

Village heatlh

It really is at a low level. A few somewhat competent workers can have a major impact.

Crossing a river on a log

Everyone needs a baby kasowari

Its kick can kill a man. It can grow as tall as a short man. It towers over small children.

But in this village, its the favorite pasttime for the kids... to aggravate and then get chased by the kasowari.

That's what happens if you don't have television, I guess...aggravate dangerous animals and then run for your lives. ..umm......FUN!

Interior Hiking pics

11 hours on the way to the village. All day on the way back (a slower pace...more people returned with us to greet the neighboring village).

Leeches. ALso, I sank up to my waist once in mud and had to be pulled out.

Quite a trip.

Pretty blue eyes!

Our "Big Boy" is now 3 years old!

...And WHOOAAAA!!! is he busy!

From 6am till 9pm at night he races, tumbles, jumps, scurries, sprints, bobs, weaves, crawls, and wears out his parents royally!

In the pic he is letting us see how yummy the cake is - inside his mouth

After my hike - my shoes torn in half! YIKES!

The front half of both feet were hanging out the front - as well as one heel out the back. Not good for 11 hours on the trail. N. helps me model my footware.

THe kids at our new home
